Microfilm Scanning Joins Efforts With Libraries

Microfilm scanning saves the day for another library. A library in Tennessee that holds records dating back to the 1800′s took the step of microfilm scanning their microfilm containing a collection of records, that will allow them to make the information available on line. The microfilm scanning was followed up with to enable text searching on the images.

Microfilm Scannig and OCR Searches

A recent news article published on the internet outlines a movement by government to fund microfilm scanning conversion of library records. The microfilm scanning will be necessary to digitize all records that currently exist on film only. The goal is to allow online access to all this information making it easier for users to access the information and at the same time, reducing space and labor related to the maintenance of a microfilm system. In most cases, libraries are requesting a high resolution and gray scale to make sure that data is not lost during the scanning process.

The OCR that follows the microfilm scanning process adds a great deal of value to the digital images. Before OCR, the images are just a digital picture of the documents. You could view the images and read the information on a computer screen and move around to look at other images. But with the OCR, the microfilm scanning project has much more functionality. This is due to the ability to electronically search for information within the image. This added feature reduces time and enhances the ability to find more information.

Florida Microfilm Scanning Services

Florida scanning

Many states, including Generation Imaging‘s homebase in Florida, have libraries, cities, municipalities, and governments that need to digitize microfilm records.  Those Florida cities that have not, will most likely do so, some time in the future.

The users, clients, and the Florida governments may have great benefits from the performed by Generation Imaging. As an example, the they could have many millions of public records stored on microfiche. These records  may need to be accessible to the people who used them for . Florida need to make sure that thousands of rolls of microfilm are inventoried in an efficient manner so that the microfilm can be located as needed. Florida city, county, or state governments may need to make sure that an adequate room is always available, and that the room is temperature control to protect the microfilm. Florida may also need to have personnel available to store and retrieve the microfilm as it is used.  A backup copy of each roll of microfilm is also needed to support the safety of the information and this may be another responsibility of the Florida city or county government. Duplicate rolls also means additional storage and cost.

Florida may take advantage of a digital and more automated system once all the records that exist on microfilm are digitize. Florida city, state, or county governments may be able to do away with the cost associated from maintaining a microfilm library once they are able to implement a and retrieval system.  With a complete and retrieval system, Florida can service customers in a more efficient and economical way. A digital system allows for a near instant access of information. Instead of having to wait for the Florida employee to find a roll of microfilm for you, so that you can search through it to find a record you need, you use a database search to have near instant access to the record you need. A system like this can save Florida money and also save user’s time.

The technology today can allow cities to convert paper documents straight to digital. Most documents are initiated on paper prior to them reaching the Florida government office. Florida may be able to change from receiving paper documents to digital images. Digital images allows updating the digital storage and retrieval system much faster.  Florida can also make a microfilm copy of the images for back up reasons.

If you have a need to convert rolls of microfilm, microfiche cards, aperture cards, or other types of microfilm, to digital format, you can contact us for additional information. We can create a digital storage and retrieval system for you from your microfilm library.
