Microfiche Scanning Information You May Not Have Known

  1. Microfiche scanning is a large niche industry that converts microfiche to digital image, such as PDF, JPEG, or TIFF formats.
  2. There are different types of fiche (COM, jacketed, step-and-repeat, 35mm, 16mm, continuous, rewritable, etc.) and each type requires a different method.
  3. Microfiche scanning via high quality/high production machines has been going on since around 1990.
  4. Using a flatbed scanner, photo cameras, or cheap scanners will not create a faithful image because they do not have the optics to blow the small frame back up to normal size.
  5. The quality of the images generated from microfiche scanning depends on the original document, if the fiche has been duplicated, and the contrast of the image.
  6. Many organizations, governments ,and individuals still have microfiche to be converted in 2011, but they either did not allocate funds or are unaware of how convenient digitizing is.
  7. Going from analogue to digital allows instantaneous retrieval of your documents on your computer- no hunting for individual cards, batches, or using a reader printer or old technology.
  8. Regarding the placement of frames on the fiche, most COM fiche read vertically, while jacketed fiche read horizontally. Inexperienced scanner operators will name the images out of order by not knowing the differences between these types of  fiche.
  9. Microfiche scanning prices are based on volume (number of cards in the collection and number of frames on a card) and fiche type.
  10. Generation Imaging, located in Davie, Florida, has excellent prices, quality, and turnaround time.
