1. Yes, Computer Output Microfilm is called COM, which is also used to designate COM microfiche  (“COM fiche”). In reality, if the machine creates roll film, it should be called Computer Output Microfilm, and if it creates microfiche it should be called Computer Output Microfiche, but very few people make this distinction. Technically, the term Computer Output Microform would be all encompassing, but no one uses it. Obviously, to say COM roll or COM fiche is a misnomer, but that’s the lngo of the micrographics industry (even “micrographics” is not in many dictionaries).
2. Not all COM is straight, fixed, or perfect- even though it is computer data. The reason? Duplicates or machine errors. Don’t believe the hype; human and machine error can cause improperly aligned COM fiche and COM rolls. In cases like that, digitizing the COM because problematic. If proper quality control methods are applied on the front end, the final stage of converting COM to digital image is a smooth process. Otherwise expect a COM image that has overscan (which could be manually cropped.)
